Weapons' training forms an integral part of our programme in martial arts. Traditionally weapons were only taught after students had mastered the empty hand techniques. Only students who had proved themselves to be responsible martial artists were taught how to use weapons. For this reason Wutan only teaches weapons after 4 months of training and character testing beginning with the least harmful weapon first. Once students have proved their reliability they are introduced to other weapons.
Short sticks or kun are taught after the first grade, followed by basic movements of the Miao Tao, the sword that Grandmaster Liu Yun Chiao used to train the Chinese army during the Second World War. The wooden sword is used so that students acquire and learn a core understanding of the techniques of this powerful weapon.
